I’m Liam.

I am an Ottawa-based journalist who focuses on environmental and socioeconomic stories in a variety of mediums. My work has been published by Capital Current, CBC, Roots Music Canada, and the Ottawa Citizen.

In the summer of 2023, I travelled to Kampala to help produce Farm Radio International’s premier podcast on nature-based solutions. In Uganda, I took part in reporting trips across the country, gathering interviews from rural farmers and villages. I learned how Ugandan farmers were adapting to climate change. I also had the opportunity to work alongside incredible local journalists who helped me adapt to working in a new country. The project is titled Nature Answers: Rural Stories from a Changing Planet and can be found on all podcast platforms.

Since returning to Canada, I have covered municipal affairs for Capital Current, an Ottawa-based publication. While working for Capital Current, I have honed my skills using Tableau and other data visualization applications to augment my journalism with multimedia graphs. While at the publication, I also became proficient in using drones to take captivating aerial shots for my articles.

Most recently, I was based in Whitehorse, working as a reporter/editor for CBC North. My stories here tended to focus on municipal and territorial issues such as mining, housing, government funding, and arts and culture events. I also wrote about environmental issues and the latest scientific discoveries and research impacting the North, while conducting data analysis and moonlighting as an associate producer for the region’s current affairs radio shows..

I recently completed my Master of Journalism degree at Carleton University, where I enhanced my writing, photography, photo editing, and audio and video production skills.

This past spring, I will interned with CBC’s Toronto Enterprise unit, where I utilized my data analysis skillset to find and pursue original local stories that are affecting Torontonians.

Before attending Carleton, I obtained an interdisciplinary degree in English and Mathematics from the University of Guelph. I have an affinity for data research and analysis and enjoy breaking down complicated and critical information for audiences.

While not a professional photographer, I also enjoy documenting my experiences in the field through photos, many of which are included in my work.
